Human Creative were engaged by Partners In Recovery & Medicare Local in late 2014 to develop and facilitate the Voicebox Project. The Project worked with residents in the Gold Coast region with lived experience of mental illness and/or disability to develop their skills in advocacy, public speaking, research and capturing creative stories.
Through a series of locally based workshops, our facilitators worked closely with participants to build their skills, create their stories and showcase them to the public. Below is an infographic we created for the project’s outcomes.
The project was such a success that we were engaged by Primary Health Network (PHN) in 2015 to roll out a new, improved version of the project – Voicebox 2. Voicebox 2 focused on participants with a lived experience of mental illness and their carers.
Participants received training in storytelling, video production, stop-motion animation and photography. With these skills they were able to produce digital stories using free applications on iPods and iPads. There were 12 digital stories completed over the course of Voicebox 2.
The Voicebox project provides an effective model for engaging groups with the objective of capacity building and creating digital advocacy pieces.
Voicebox stories from both project have been obtained visibility on a number of platforms including ABC open and the Community Access New York City Mental Health Film Festival.
